Booker Prize and Translation

The booker prize is formerly known as Booker-McConnell Prize also called as Man Booker Prize for Fiction. This is a literary prize awarded for single best original novel written in English language, published in U.K. Translators also receive credits as their work needs to be translated into English to get nominated for this prize. The prize amount of £50,000 has to be shared equally between author and translator. Each nominated writer receives £10,000.

  1. This year, A Horse Walks into a Bar, written by David Grossman had won the Man Booker international prize for the best fiction in translation. This novel focuses on comedian Docaleh Greenstein’ act. It is narrated by a retired court judge, Avishai Lazar who is invited by comedian to attend a stand up show. Judge and comedian Greenstein, trade on offensive jokes. The latter is then haunted by past decisions that detrimentally affect his personal relationships while he performs on stage.

The best-selling fiction and non-fiction books by Grossman has been translated into 36 languages. His English translator, Jessica Cohen was seen sharing the prize money with her writer.

  1. Han Kangs’s The Vegetarian translated by Deborah Smith had won The Booker Prize last year. This South Korean novelist describes about the painful time of Yeong-ye when she declares herself as vegetarian due to a dream that she repels from.

The Vegetarian has been translated into 15 languages. Deborah Smith translated it into English. This South Korean novel wins the biggest translation award while a Guardian was entitled as The Man Booker international prize: a celebration of translation.

  1. A Brief History of Seven Killings had won the Booker Prize in 2015. Written by author Marlon James, this book explores the attempted assassination of bob Marley which happened during the late 1970’s. Just before the Jamaican elections, Marley was to play the Smile Jamaica concert, when gunmen stormed his house. The attack killed the superstar, wife and his manager and injured several others. This fictional exploration talks about the dangerous time from the streets and slums of Kinston in the 1970’s.

Marlon James is the first Jamaican to win the coveted prize. His novel is inspired by true events and has a special mention about Dickens who influenced him.

  1. The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flangan had won the 2014 Booker Prize. This story is about Dorrigo Evans, an Australian doctor who is haunted by a love affair with his aunt and his subsequent experiences as a prisoner of war. Post-war he finds his growing popularity as he fights with his sense of failing and guilt.

There are many such novels that get shortlisted for The Booker Prize but only the best received the prize money.
